Autophagy means "self consuming", yes. We recycle our cells in order to keep a tidy house. Proteins that are used up and no longer useful are recycled. The Nobel Prize for Biology in 2016 was awarded to a Japanese scientist for his research into autophagy. Autophagy is something that you want to be occurring on a regular basis.
How do you get autophagy to commence? Intermittent fasting pushes the start button.
Through intermittent fasting. But you say, "I can't do that!" And I say, "You are already doing it." We just need to tweak the schedule a bit.
There are many ways to do it. But my preferred method is to finish eating by 8pm and then break my fast, "breakfast" around noon. I am not skipping breakfast! I just choose to eat a little later. This gives me 15 to 16 hours of no food consumption (although I do have some legal ways to cheat!) This allows autophagy to kick in and give the stomach a chance to empty, rests my pancreas, certainly kicks over consumption of glucose to the curb.
You may have heard it said that sugar is the root of all illness and that is not far from the truth. Sweets and overconsumption of sweets, and this includes bread and pasta, will surely help you pack on the pounds. A lot is made of the 10,000 carbohydrates that Michael Phelps was eating while earning a boat load of gold medals, but realize he was in the pool 7 to 10 hours a day.
I personally lost 35 lbs over the last couple of years. There's a little more to the story which I am sure is written somewhere. Looking...

I wrote this weight loss story in 2019. Now I am another 10 lbs lighter. So it's not a fad diet I am talking about but a change in belief which allowed me to change my lifestyle.
